Cyprus has traditionally played an important role in the business world, primarily because of its strategic location at the crossroads of Europe, Asia and Africa. Its location, along with its highly developed legal, taxation, banking, financial, infrastructure and telecommunications systems, and the advantages of European Union membership have resulted in a new economic era for the island. The World Bank has described the dynamic and flexible Cypriot economy as the region’s “miracle.”
In 2003, Cyprus implemented a major taxation reform in full compliance with EU and OECD principles. The major characteristics of the Cyprus tax system are: |
- The lowest corporate tax rate in Europe – 10%
- Tax-exempt dividend income (subject to non-stringent conditions)
- No withholding taxes on payments of dividends, interest or royalties (provided intellectual property rights are not used within Cyprus) irrespective of recipient
- No taxation on profits from the sale of titles / securities (no minimum holding period or percentage)
- No taxation on profits of foreign permanent establishments
- No taxation on the liquidation of a Cypriot company
- Wide tax treaty network with 38 treaties in force with 45 countries
- Unilateral tax credit relief irrespective of the existence of a tax treaty
- No substance, CFC or debt-to-equity / thin capitalization rules
- Full adoption of the EC directives

Thousands of foreign investors structure their investments through Cyprus and the number and rate of annual company incorporations continues to accelerate. These strong commercial signals continue to prove the success of the Cypriot taxation system and the island's fame as an international financial centre. |
